Open Positions

General Ledger Accountant

Hybrid from our San Francisco, Portland, Phoenix, NYC, or London offices

Your Mission, Should You Choose To Accept

Joining our finance team means you’ll be working on a diverse range of projects with the flexibility to design your own path, take ownership, and make a big impact. We're not just revolutionizing the way people manage their pre-accounting, we're revolutionizing how efficiently a public company can run their accounting processes. As a member of the finance team at Expensify, you’ll be at the center of it all!

About Us

Expensify is a flat organization guided by two simple rules: Get shit done and Don’t ruin it for everyone else. We trust everyone to manage their own work, with the understanding that these rules come with both freedom and accountability. Our lean, ambitious finance team handles it all. Day-to-day tasks are shared across the team, while complex or high-judgment technical accounting matters fall to our most senior members. Once you’ve wrapped up your core work, you’re encouraged to use your time on whatever projects you believe will create the most value.

About You

As a General Ledger Accountant your responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with other team members and overseeing external accounting staff to ensure proper accounting, reporting and documentation for corporate transactions and strategic initiatives for both US and Foreign subsidiaries.

  • Performing and/or reviewing expense coding, cash application entries, and payroll entries and reconciliations

  • Performing and/or reviewing tasks in the monthly and quarterly close process, including account reconciliations, journal entries, internal reports, and related analyses for timely and accurate reporting

  • Ensuring compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley Section 404 key controls in the areas of responsibility

  • Engaging with internal and external auditors

  • Driving innovation and efficiencies through accounting projects and initiatives with other members of the finance team

We’re Looking For Someone Who:

  • Has 4+ years of public accounting (Big Four a plus) and industry experience. An active CPA is not required, although having one (or pursuing one) will facilitate future growth within the Finance team.

  • Has US-based public accounting experience; strong knowledge of US GAAP, and internal controls

  • Can demonstrate strong communication, problem-solving, analytical, and accounting skills

  • Has the ability to critically review and analyze data with attention to detail, identify issues, develop and execute recommendations

  • Thinks outside the box, focuses on how to improve processes and identify risks

  • Is comfortable independently making the tough decisions on complex issues

  • Is willing to roll up their sleeves and take on all aspects of the team’s work, from round robin chores to process improvement projects.

  • Is proficient with Microsoft Excel, NetSuite, GSuite, Workiva, and Alteryx

  • Has experience working at/with a public tech company

  • Values an in-person culture and will come into our San Francisco, Portland, Phoenix, New York City, or London office.

Next Steps

Applying is easy, but it takes time. See, while we know you're awesome, it's actually really hard and time consuming to find you in the midst of literally hundreds of other applications we get from everyone else. So this is where we're going to ask our first favor: can you make it really easy and obvious how great you are, so we don't accidentally overlook you? There are many ways to do that, but the easiest way to help us out is by answering the following questions:

  1. Are you currently located in San Francisco, Portland, Phoenix, New York City or London - willing to relocate?

  2. What's your public accounting/industry history? Highlight your public accounting and/or public company experience.

  3. What is the most complex finance problem you have solved? What special projects have you led that make you stand out?

  4. What tools/technologies do you use to be more efficient?

  5. Do you have an active CPA or are you pursuing one? Why or why not?

  6. What do you want to do with the rest of your life, and how is Expensify a step toward your long-term goals? (We’re serious, we want to know! Share what you’re comfortable sharing, but we are a group of ambitious individuals building a community of people who want to achieve success in every aspect of our lives, and we encourage employees to figure out how they can use Expensify to realize their personal goals with the support of the company around them.)

  7. How did you hear about us? A job posting? Chalk on a sidewalk? From a friend? Let us know where you saw this opening.

Please note that we are only looking for candidates based in San Francisco, Portland, Phoenix, New York City, or London, or who are willing to relocate.

Forward your responses to the questions and resume to apply@expensify.com. We're excited to hear from you!

We’re committed to providing a fair and inclusive hiring experience. If you need a reasonable accommodation at any stage of the process, just let us know—we’re happy to help
