Compliance & Risk Generalist

Remote - US

Your Mission, Should You Choose To Accept

Join our passionate team of compliance experts to solve real-world problems and help people spend less time managing expenses and more time pursuing their real goals. As we revolutionize the way people manage their expenses, being part of the Expensify team means building the easiest, fastest, and most efficient platform to automate everything expense-related.

Compliance & Risk Generalist Overview

As a Compliance & Risk Generalist, you’ll help design the systems that protect customer funds and keep our product compliant as we grow. You’ll lead the execution of AML/KYC workflows, vendor due diligence, and regulatory reporting — turning complex requirements into practical, repeatable processes that other teams easily understand.

You’ll help build and scale transaction monitoring that is accurate, defensible, and audit-ready. Partnering closely with Product and Engineering, you’ll embed compliance into how we build and ship, influencing how features launch, how risk is evaluated, and how we meet regulatory obligations, all without slowing innovation.

What Makes This Opportunity Special

  • Meaningfully contribute to the product. Collaborate directly with Product and Engineering teams to review proposals and ensure regulatory obligations are met before features go live.

  • Join at the expansion stage. Help lead compliance efforts as we expand our licensed operations nationwide, increasing both volume and regulatory scrutiny.

  • Support business-critical operations. Contribute to SOC 1/SOC 2/SOX controls, regulatory reporting, and audit readiness that directly impact our ability to operate and grow.

  • Operate with autonomy. On a small, high-impact team, you’ll be trusted to own your day-to-day priorities and make judgment calls without constant oversight.

About You

  • You take ownership naturally. When something needs to get done, you don’t wait for perfect instructions, you figure out the next right step and move.

  • You’re comfortable with repetition and volume, but you’re never complacent. You look for ways to tighten workflows, reduce friction, or even introduce automation.

  • You're self-directed and accountable. In a small team, you prioritize thoughtfully, weigh risk carefully, and escalate when it truly matters — not by default.

  • You think clearly under scrutiny. Deadlines, audits, and regulatory reviews don’t rattle you — they sharpen your focus.

  • You can translate complexity without ego. You’re able to explain the “why” behind compliance requirements to teammates who may not love the constraints, and you do it with patience and clarity.

Background and Experience

Required:

  • 2+ years of hands-on experience executing compliance, risk, or regulated operational workflows such as AML/KYC reviews, transaction monitoring, vendor due diligence, or regulatory reporting.

  • Direct experience working in structured, documentation-heavy environments where accuracy and consistency directly impact regulatory or financial outcomes.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage high-volume review work with strong attention to detail and disciplined follow-through.

  • Experience drafting reports, documenting findings, and maintaining records that may be reviewed internally or externally.

  • Proven ability to work independently and make sound judgment calls in risk-sensitive environments.

Desirable:

  • Experience in fintech, payments, banking, or money transmission environments.

  • Exposure to AML transaction monitoring or GRC tools such as Unit21, OneTrust, or Vanta.

  • Familiarity with SOC1/SOC 2/SOX controls, regulatory reporting, or regulatory examinations.

  • CAFCA, CTMA, and/or CAMS certification or progress toward AML-related professional credentials.

Daily Focus & Responsibilities

Core Compliance Operations (Primary Focus)

  • Own the day-to-day compliance documentation and filings, vendor due diligence, and regulatory reporting workflows, completing work accurately and on time.

  • Review and resolve transaction monitoring alerts, documenting decisions clearly and escalating when risk warrants it.

  • Maintain clear, organized records so decisions are traceable and easy to review.

Regulatory Reporting & State Expansion

  • Prepare and submit state-level regulatory reports as new jurisdictions come online, delivering accurate first drafts and incorporating feedback efficiently.

  • Adjust monitoring, reporting, and documentation workflows to meet state-specific requirements as additional licenses are activated.

  • Support readiness for state exams and regulatory inquiries tied to expanded money transmission operations.

Product & Risk Oversight

  • Serve as a required reviewer for product changes, identifying downstream compliance impact on reporting, disclosures, and monitoring workflows.

  • Turn recurring issues into clear, practical guardrails that help teams navigate similar scenarios in the future.

  • Get involved in product discussions early with a compliance-first mindset that keeps work moving in the right direction.

Next Steps

Like what you see? Applying is easy, but it takes time. See, while we know you're awesome, it's actually really hard and time-consuming to find you in the midst of literally hundreds of other applications we get from everyone else. So this is where we're going to ask our first favor: can you make it really easy and obvious how great you are, so we don't accidentally overlook you? There are many ways to do that, but the easiest way to help us out is by answering the following questions:

  1. Can you share your LinkedIn profile so we can learn more about your professional journey?

  2. Tell us about a time you owned a compliance, risk, or operational workflow end-to-end (e.g., AML/KYC reviews, monitoring alerts, vendor due diligence, reporting). What was your responsibility, and how did you ensure the work was completed accurately and on time?

  3. Describe a situation where you identified a compliance or risk issue in a product, a process, or workflow. How did you raise it, and what solution did you help implement?

  4. This role involves high-volume review work. How do you maintain accuracy and sound judgment when handling repetitive tasks under time pressure?

  5. Choose a compliance concept you’re well-versed in (e.g., AML, KYC, transaction monitoring, required disclosures, etc.) and explain it in plain language as if you were speaking to a co-worker who doesn’t have a compliance background.

  6. What do you want to do with the rest of your life, and how is Expensify a step toward your long-term goals? (We’re serious, we want to know! Share what you’re comfortable sharing, but we are a group of ambitious individuals building a community of people who want to achieve success in every aspect of our lives, and we encourage employees to figure out how they can use Expensify to realize their personal goals with the support of the company around them.)

  7. How did you hear about us? A job posting? Chalk on a sidewalk? From a friend? Let us know where you saw this opening.

You can send your answers and your resume to apply@expensify.com with “Compliance & Risk Generalist” in the subject line. We're excited to hear from you!
